Jovial China celebrations set tone for upcoming Canton Fair
CG Lin Jing, published on Cape Times, October 7

All the Chinese people are celebrating the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic of China in a happy and peaceful atmosphere. Under the leadership of the CPC, China has achieved extraordinary development and transformation over the past 72 years that has attracted the world's attention. With its first centenary goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects becoming a reality, China has embarked on the new journey towards building a great modern socialist country in an all-round way.

2021 is also the first year of the implementation of China's 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025). China, under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core, has coordinated epidemic response with social and economic development, and effectively responded to the complex and grave international environment, as well as multiple challenges from COVID-19 and severe floods, and strive to build a new development paradigm with domestic circulation as the mainstay and domestic and international circulations reinforcing each other, and promote high-quality development.

In the new development stage, China is committed to opening up at a higher level, and better sharing the opportunities brought by its development with the international community for world economic recovery and growth.

As China's important window for opening up to the outside world and its premier trade promotion platform, the Canton Fair, also known as China Import and Export Fair, was first launched in 1957 and has become the largest and most comprehensive international trading event. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Guangdong Province and organized by China Foreign Trade Centre, it is held every spring and autumn in Guangzhou, China. Latest statistics of the Fair show that the accumulated export volume amounted to about USD 1.4126 trillion and the total number of overseas buyers reached 8.99 million. The Fair is showing greater vitality in China's new development stage.

Early this year, at the 129th Canton Fair, 26,000 Chinese and international exhibitors displayed products via live marketing events, conducted online matchmaking and negotiations via virtual Canton Fair platform. Buyers from 227 countries and regions registered and visited the Fairs, which set a new record.

It is also a platform for people from the business circle to connect with China and share opportunities. Such trade exchanges will yield fruitful results, contributing greatly to international trade and the smooth growth of global industrial and supply chain. As a responsible major country, China's resolution to further opening up is perfectly showcased at Canton Fair.

At the new starting point toward China's second centenary goal, the organizers of the 130th Canton Fair, which will be held in Guangzhou, China from Oct 15 to 19 with both online exhibition and offline activities, have been striving to further integrate online and offline events, domestic and international trade, import and export, exhibition and conference, aiming for a more efficient trade platform that demonstrates the best and latest achievements of China's economic growth, industrial development and product upgrading. According to Chu Shijia, Director General of China Foreign Trade Centre, many companies registered at the Fair have applied for the Canton Fair Export Product Design Awards (CF Awards) with their innovative products with cutting-edge technologies, materials, craftsmanship and green energy sources. This fully demonstrates China's resolution to boost innovative and green economy.

China and Africa have always been good partners on the path to common development. Even with the onslaught of COVID-19, China has remained Africa's largest trading partner for 12 consecutive years. Direct Chinese investment in Africa has been growing steadily, reaching US$3 billion in 2020 alone. China has been South Africa's largest trading partner for 12 consecutive years, while South Africa has been China's largest trading partner in Africa for 11 consecutive years. In the first eight months of this year, China-South Africa trade totals $34.72 billion, up by 65.7% year on year. By making better use of the trade cooperation platform of the Canton Fair, the potential of economic and trade cooperation between China and Africa, China and South Africa will be further released.

The Chinese Consulate General in Cape Town is committed to enhancing sub-national and people-to-people exchanges between three Cape provinces in its consular district and China via close public-private cooperation as well as government-enterprise linkages. We warmly welcome all friends from the business circle in South Africa to attend the 130th Canton Fair and seize this golden opportunity.
