Consul General Liang Shugen Attended Ceremony For The Naming Of Krotoa Place |

On 9 August 2012, the ceremony for the naming of Krotoa Place was held by the Cape Town Mayor's Office in Cape Town. Consul General Liang Shugen attended the ceremony. The Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille, announced a section of Castle Street and St George's Mall was named Krotoa Place to commemorate Van Meerhof's work of reconciliation between the local people and the European settlers in early days. The Mayor hoped that South Africa will build a country that all races will live in harmony.
After the ceremony, Consul General Liang had a friendly conversation with the Mayor.
Krotoa van Merrrhof(1642-1674), worked in the household of Jan Van Riebeeck, the first governor of Cape colony when she was young. She learned Dutch and Portuguese and later became an interpreter and a negotiator between the Dutch and Khoi herdsmen. She advocated peace and reconciliation between different races and was instrumental in the Peace Settlement of First Dutch-Khoi war between 1659-1660. |
