Urgent need to fight political virus in battle against Covid-19
Consul General Lin Jing

At this crucial moment when countries around the world join hands for a battle against the novel coronavirus, U.S. leaders and government are busy attacking the World Health Organization, suspending membership dues, and even shifting all the blames for their domestic failure of containment of the virus to China. When the U.S. government smeared China as the birthplace of Covid-19, but could not produce any actual evidence, the United States has become an incubator and a super spreader of the political virus, which not only poses a grave threat to the world health safety system, but also makes more American people victims of the political virus.

American politicians’ hysterical scapegoating and stigmatizing focuses on that China made Covid-19 and concealed the disease, and the WHO defended China and failed to notify the United States of the severity of the pandemic in a timely manner. But facts speak louder than words. A lie repeated a thousand times is still a lie. It can neither change the facts nor save the lives of more than 80,000 Americans who died in the pandemic.

China first received a report of the pneumonia case of unknown cause on Dec 27, 2019 and released its first outbreak notice on Dec 31, and has been regularly informing the WHO, relevant countries and regions about the pneumonia outbreak from Jan 3, 2020. WHO released its first briefing on cases of pneumonia of unknown cause in Wuhan on Jan 5, and China submitted to the WHO the genome sequence of the novel coronavirus on Jan 12. However as of Jan 30, there was not yet one single Covid-19 death in the United States. The first is now reported to have occurred on February 6.

The World Health Organization emphasized repeatedly that all available evidence suggests that the Covid-19 virus has an animal origin and is not manipulated or constructed in a lab or somewhere else.

International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents published a study on May 3rd , believing that Covid-19 was spreading in France in late December 2019, the patients’ absence of a link with China and the lack of recent travel suggest that the disease was already locally spreading among the French population and unrecognized before the global outbreak accelerated.

National Geographic also published an interview with Anthony Fauci, the director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases on May 4, in which Fauci shot down the discussion that has been raging among politicians and pundits, and said the best evidence shows the virus behind the pandemic was not made in a lab in China.

A summary released by the U.S. CDC dated on May 1 indicated the acceleration of Covid-19 outbreak in the U.S. is due to the factors such as Continued travel-associated importations of the virus, Large gatherings, Cryptic transmission and so on. When the U.S. banned non-U.S. travelers from China on February 2, however,139,305 travelers arrived from Italy and 1.74 million from all Schengen countries during that month.

The ODNI (Office of the Director of National Intelligence) of the U.S. issued a press release on April 30, saying “The Intelligence Community concurs with the wide scientific consensus that the Covid-19 virus was not manmade or genetically modified."

The despicable smear campaign launched by American politicians against China and WHO appears pale and weak in the face of ample scientific evidence. The USA's top diplomat Pompeo even criticized South Africa and other countries for accepting doctors from Cuba, and also blatantly alienated China-African relations by groundless accusations, but turned blind eye on iron-clad fact that the containment of pandemic in East Asia and Africa is much better and more effective than the U.S. up to now.

The breeding soil for political virus is the long-held hegemony, exclusivism, cold war thinking and zero-sum mentality in the United States, and its symptom is to mobilize national power to launch malicious political propaganda and provoke alienation, and abduct world medias with outdated ideology.

The long-term prosperity and stability of the post-World War II world is based on a multilateral system guided by the United Nations and extensive international cooperation. The U.S. political virus completely prioritizes its pure domestic interest and the self-deceiving logic of always making others scapegoats for its own policy failures will lead no where but lift a stone to smash its own feet and sabotage the global anti-pandemic system centered on WHO.

Faced with a major public health crisis, we got a lesson that no country could be immune from a global crisis and there are still loopholes and flaws in the world health safety system. The pressing task at the moment for international community is to establish a more robust and powerful early warning and joint defense mechanism with the WHO as the center to provide a stable foundation for sustainable development of global economy.

Viruses are common enemies of human beings and pandemics pose common challenges for all countries. Based on the successful experiences on containing the past pandemics as HIV, H1N1 or SARS, the international community needs to join hands instead of undercutting others' efforts under various pretexts and all parties should come together in the spirit of partnership to jointly combat Covid-19, upholding multilateralism, unity and coordination and improving global governance. Solidarity and cooperation is the most powerful weapon for the international community to defeat Covid-19 and eradicate political virus as well.
