On 18 April 2026, Deputy Consul-General of China in Cape Town, Wang Xiao, attended the 5th Chinese Singing Competition hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Town (CIUCT).

In her address, Deputy Consul General Wang expressed that language is a tool for human beings to exchange thoughts, a carrier for inheriting civilization, and a bridge for enhancing understanding. Chinese songs, as a highly engaging cultural medium, enable learners to experience firsthand the depth and emotional richness of Chinese culture through melody and lyrics. Welcome more South African friends to learn Chinese, which will open the window on modern China and the Chinese civilization.

The competition was composed of university and primary/secondary school groups. The contestants gave wonderful performances which won rounds of applause and cheers.
